This time of year is busy as I prepare for winter and holiday orders. With winter also comes breeding season, drying up Starburst, and of course baby goats.
But before the hustle and bustle of the kidding season, we have to prepare for kidding season.
This means making sure all goats are bred, healthy, and ready for their kids no matter how many times they have done it before. Because, no matter what, there can always be mistakes and tragedies and it’s my job to try to avoid these at all costs.
Along with the goats being prepared, the barn and kidding kit has to be prepared. Barn preparations include winter proofing like boarding up doors/windows and cleaning pens and putting down thick bedding. The broods (mama goats) will all get their own pen to bond with their kids then will all be put together when we feel they are well acquainted. We also have cameras that come through on our phones and those have to be arranged depending on where the pens are located in the barn. We also have to hang heat lamps and make sure the goats won’t somehow danger themselves on them. (We have found that the best and safest heat lamps are from Premier One- Prima Heat Lamp).
And on top of all of this, I am still a full-time college student. So, that being said, I want you all to know that I am working very hard to get the products all well stocked in time for Christmas orders but time is scarce. Especially with Starburst being gone right now then coming back just before being dried up… It’s hectic!
